Chicago's New Paid Leave Ordinance Amended to Delay Implementation until July 1, 2024

12.08.23

Attention Employers with Chicago-Based Employees – Last month, the City of Chicago rolled out its Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance, pursuant to which most Chicago employees would be entitled to 40 hours of paid sick leave plus another 40 hours of paid leave for any reason. The ordinance was slated to go into effect on December 31, 2023.

However, on December 7, 2023, upon receiving pressure from the small business community, among others, the City’s Workforce Development Committee voted to amend the ordinance to delay its implementation to July 1, 2024 and narrow its application. The full City council will vote on the amendments next week. Stay tuned for further developments.

Until then, take a breath and enjoy the holidays! Your AG team is here if you have any questions or need assistance as to your paid leave policies. Please reach out to Amy Gibson or the Aronberg Goldgehn attorney with whom you work for more information.
