James S. Jarvis counsels clients with respect to personal financial matters, estate planning, asset protection and structured corporate transactions from a tax vantage. He has represented clients in federal tax audits, will contests and general probate matters.

In his business law practice, Jim represents clients in the formation and organization of new businesses as corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies, acquisitions and dispositions of businesses or interests in businesses, and succession planning.

Jim’s estate planning work emphasizes business succession, tax reduction and asset protection planning. He has drafted wills, trusts, powers of attorney for health care and property, prenuptial agreements, limited partnership agreements, limited liability company operating agreements, real estate contracts and leases, and shareholders agreements. He has prepared federal and state individual and fiduciary income tax returns and federal and state estate and gift tax returns.

As a member of the Illinois State Bar Association’s Federal Tax Section, Jim participated in the drafting of the Illinois Limited Liability Company Act. He has lectured on behalf of the Illinois State Bar Association Law Ed Series on the tax aspects involving the dissolution of marriage, the National Business Institute with respect to estate planning for retirement, and ISMIE Mutual Insurance Company on asset protection for physicians.


Jim has practiced law with Aronberg Goldgehn since 1967. Prior to entering private practice, he served as a Judge Advocate General with the U.S. Navy and as a tax attorney with Arthur Andersen & Company. Since 2004, he has been recognized as a Leading Lawyer in Closely & Privately Held Business Law by Leading Lawyers Magazine, a designation awarded to less than 5 percent of Illinois attorneys.

When he's not practicing law, Jim spends time training his Shetland Sheepdog.
